Choosing the blog name is, according to those in the know probably one of the most important steps to creating a new blog. Apparently, when choosing the blog name it needs to be catchy, easy to remember and spell, and relate to you somehow.
How I ended up choosing the blog name ‘One foot in the Cave’ ?
There’s two parts to that answer, first my wife sometimes (often) lovingly refers to me as Victor Meldrew from the classic BBC British comedy ‘One foot in the Grave’. Secondly we are planning to purchase a cave house in Andalucia, Spain.
Still no idea what I’m talking about ?
Then please let me explain. So what was ‘One foot in the Grave’ about, and who was Victor Meldrew ?
The series ‘One foot on the Grave’ (which ran for 11 years through the 90’s), follows Meldrew who takes (involuntary) early retirement as he attempts to fill his new-found leisure with odd jobs, unusual idiosyncrasies, or to get a new working job. It follows his exploits and mishaps as he finds himself at war with the world and everything in it.
His various efforts to keep himself busy, while encountering various misfortunes and misunderstandings are the themes of the sitcom, sympathy is directed towards him as he becomes embroiled in complex misunderstandings, bureaucratic vanity and, at times, sheer bad luck. These on goings regularly lead to him complaining heartily.
He believes that everything is going wrong for him all the time, and he has the right to be upset because it is always someone else’s fault. When events get the better of him, and a full verbal onslaught is forthcoming. “Victor-isms” include “I do not believe it!”, “I don’t believe it!”, “Un-be-lievable!”, “What in the name of bloody hell?”, “In the name of sanity!”.
The character epitomised the archetypal grumpy old man, due to the series’ popularity, people who constantly complain and are irritated by minor things are often compared to Victor Meldrew by the British Media.
Now that I’ve cleared all that up, I must protest that I’m certainly not that old and almost certainly not that bad ! Maybe the odd sigh and grumble every now and again and a propensity to use the word ‘oops’ when something goes wrong 😉
Oh and did I forget to mention that we are planning to buy a cave house ?
And so by an elaborate and cunning play on words we have come to how I went about choosing the blog name ‘One foot in the Cave’.
So … Who are one foot in the cave ?
We (Danny and Josie) have spent the last 10 years living and working in the Caribbean. In 2015 we decided we wanted to move closer to family and friends so bought a cave house in the Granada region of Andalucia, Spain. We moved there full time in January 2017. Now we write about our experiences of cave living and how we are adapting to life in Spain.
We also have a Facebook page full of pictures, experiences and information that we have found useful along the way. If its your thing, you can also follow us on Instagram 🙂
